Scientific work
In two articles published in the Journal of the Ministry of Public Education , 1867 , No. 4, and 1874, No. 6 and 7, Leontovich came up with the theory of the communal nature of the political life of ancient Russia and, by the way, argued that under the verse of Russian Truth should understand the family community. Most of Leontovich’s works are devoted to ancient Slavic and especially Lithuanian-Russian law; in this last area he occupies a prominent place. Less successful are his experiments in explaining the Tatar influences on the system and law of the Moscow state; in scientific criticism they met a serious rebuff. Two of his experiences in processing the history of Russian law stopped at the very beginning. His bibliography on the history of Russian law is very useful.
In 1864 he received a master's degree in state law for his research “Historical research on the rights of Lithuanian-Russian Jews” (Kiev, 1863). AT . received a doctorate in public law for his dissertation “Ancient Croatian-Dalmatian legislation” (Odessa, 1868). Decorated with orders: sv. Anne 2 degrees with the Imperial crown and St. Vladimir 3 degrees. He was a full member of the Serbian Scientific Society in Belgrade and the Society of History and Antiquities in Odessa.
Professor Leontovich is a recognized expert in the field of the history of state institutions and the law of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Together with Professor M. Vladimirsky-Budanov, he is the founder of the Kiev historical and legal school (the school of historians of West Russian law), authoritative in historical and legal science. The scientist is known for his fundamental studies of Lithuanian-Russian law. F. Leontovich systematized and published several volumes of acts of the Lithuanian metric (from the Warsaw archives). The total number of his scientific works reaches 80 bibliographic units.
Leontovich prepared for publication over 750 acts of 1413-1507, which he extracted from the Lithuanian metric. The list of his works is in "Notes of the Society of History, Philology and Law at the University of Warsaw" (Issue IV, 1908). - Wed his obituary in Art. F.V. Taranovsky ("Legal Notes", 1911, No. 1).
