Biography
Alfred Lant and Lynn Fontann were remembered by the audience as an outstanding couple of actors on the American stage of the first half of the 20th century.
He won three Tony Awards : in 1954 as the best director of the play (Ondine), in 1955 as the best dramatic actor of the play (Quadrille), and in 1970, together with his wife, Lynn Fontanne received a special award. He was also nominated for an award in 1959 as the best actor in the play for the play “Visit”.
Despite the somewhat replayed role of Maxwell Anderson from Queen Elizabeth, in the film The Guardsman (1931), Lant stated that Shakespeare's film adaptation in the dialogue mode was more typical for the screen version of Shakespeare of those days. In 1932, Alfred Lant was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, but Fredrick March received the statuette that year for his work in the film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde .
