The city is located on the shores of the sacred lake Pushkar . The average height of the city above sea level is 510 meters. Pushkar is one of the oldest cities in India. The date of its foundation is unknown, but Hindu traditions associate the appearance of the city with the creator of the Universe Brahma . It is said that Brahma, in order to receive darshan of Vishnu , performed severe austerities in this place for 60,000 years.
There are many Hindu temples in Pushkar. Most of the ancient temples were destroyed by Muslims and subsequently restored. The most famous is the temple of Brahma, built in the XIV century . This is one of the few temples in the world dedicated to this deity. 52 ghats are located on the shores of Lake Pushkar, where pilgrims take bath in the sacred lake. Pushkar is also known for having a famous camel fair every year.
Etymology
Pushkar in Sanskrit means "blue lotus flower." Hindus believe that God sent a swan holding a lotus flower in its beak so that in the place where the flower falls, Brahma created a great altar. And the place where the lotus fell was called Pushkar.
