This holiday is dedicated to the memory of the fighter for social rights of workers and migrants Cesar Chavez , an American who grew up in a family of immigrants from Mexico , who was born on March 31 near the city of Huma (Arizona) in 1927 (died April 23, 1993 ). This man became an American hero and a symbol of the struggle for the social and civil rights of Mexican agricultural migrant workers. The holiday is the first in US history in honor of American human rights defenders of Mexican descent.
Of the eight US states where this holiday is celebrated, in seven, “Cesar Chavez Day” is not a non-working day if, depending on the year, does not fall on a day off. In California, in 2000, the legislature approved a bill to establish March 31 as the official holiday, Cesar Chavez Day, and declared the day a day off [2] .
