Mount Ben Balben is located in County Sligo , in the extreme northwest of Ireland, 10 kilometers north of Sligo . The height of the mountain is 527 meters. Ben Balben towers over the entire county of Sligo and is its symbol. Along with Noknari and Croagh Patrick , Ben Balben is among the 3 most famous mountains of Ireland. According to Irish legends, a monstrous wild boar from Ben Balben lived on this mountain, who Diarmide killed and buried in the Leh on Muik hill near Drumcliffe . In Drumcliffe, at the foot of Ben Balben, according to his desire, the great Irish poet W. B. Yates was buried.
The mountain got its present appearance during the last Great Glaciation. Initially, it had a high "hump", which was cut off by a creeping glacier. Ben-Balben is composed almost entirely of limestone rocks. The age of mountain building is over 320 million years.
