Biography
The Danes were born in Copenhagen . [1] During the Great Northern War of 1700-1721, he commanded a detachment of Danish courts in Norway (1711-1712), but Wilster was put on trial and dismissed for miscalculations and unrestrained conduct committed against the Swedes. He switched to Swedish service, participated in the battle near the island of Rügen (1715) , in which he lost his leg. After the battle, he commanded the Swedish squadrons on the Baltic Sea [2] , however, due to his restless nature, he was forced to leave Sweden and move to Russia.
In 1721, he received the rank of Russian Vice Admiral and took a place in the Admiralty College . [3]
At the suggestion of Wilster, who at one time had learned about such plans by the Swedish king Charles XII, and under his leadership, a secret Madagascar expedition was equipped. In 1723, on the orders of Peter the Great , Vice Admiral Wilster led a secret expedition around Africa through the old sea route - its purpose was to establish ties with the pirate republic in Madagascar to create a naval base in the Indian Ocean and establish relations with the Mughal empire in India. However, this attempt was unsuccessful. Wilster's expedition was badly prepared, and the ships returned halfway to Russia.
In 1727 - 1728, the vice admiral was the head of the Naval Academy , and in 1729 he became commander of the port of Kronstadt .
Family
In 1721, Wilster brought with him to Russia and his family. The two sons of Vice Admiral served in the Baltic Fleet. The first, Yagan Heinrich Wilster, entered the Russian service on December 23, 1721 with the rank of captain of the 3rd rank, commanded the battleships Poltava (1722-1723) and Panteleimon-Victoria (1723), and died on September 6, 1723; the second, Ulrich Kristian Wilster, entered the Russian service on December 5, 1721 with the rank of captain-lieutenant, commanded the battleship Do Not Touch Me , and died in 1738.
