Earthquake Location

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 105 km south-east of Guizot , 210 km south-west of Dadali ( Santa Isabel ) and 295 km north-west of Honiara , Guadalcanal [3] .

The earthquake hypocenter fell under the ocean floor near the city of Guizot, which was seriously damaged in the 2007 earthquake [4] .

Implications

The earthquake served as a starting impulse for landslides and tsunamis on the Rendova and Tetepar islands [1] . The three-meter tsunami destroyed 200 homes on Rendovo and made a thousand people - a third of the island’s population - homeless [1] . The village of Banitat lost 16 homes and 32 were damaged. [4]

Seven fishermen from the village of Viru (Marovo Island) were missing [5] .

Loti Yeats, who is responsible for emergency prevention, commented on the situation, saying that according to preliminary data several hundred houses had been damaged, but no data had yet been received from two or three villages, where the situation could have been much worse [4] .

Ten foreign tourists were evacuated from Tetepare island [4] .
