Description

Small white-faced leptotyl reaches a length of 28 cm [2] . Sexual dimorphism is slightly expressed.

Lesser white-faced leptotyl are inconspicuous pigeons. In the male, the underside of the body is light, the back is chestnut-colored, and the top of the tail is white. The forehead is white with a pink glow. The top of the head is from reddish gray to reddish brown. The back neck is brown or gray with pink or from bronze green to a reddish tint. In some subspecies, the ocular ring is blue. However, there are also subspecies with red circles around the eyes.

Distribution

Lesser white-faced leptotyl is common from the southern US states through Central America to South America. She is absent in Chile and in the south of Argentina. It inhabits forest edges in arid areas, as well as light forests and cultural landscapes.

Behavior

It feeds on fruits, as well as grass seeds, cactus fruits and cereals. Animal feed also plays a role in its nutritional spectrum. It, unlike most pigeon species, also feeds on such large insects as locusts and crickets [3] . Typically for the small white-headed leptotile, fast, nervous movements and head and tail movements with insecurity and anxiety. In this case, the tail is tightened and quickly lifted. These tail movements are often accompanied by synchronous head movements [4] .

Reproduction

Lesser white-faced leptotyl nests in trees or bushes. The nest is large compared to other pigeon nests. The masonry consists of two cream-colored eggs. The incubation period is 14 days [2] .
