History
After the Qing Empire defeated the Dzungarian Khanate , the Commissariat Hami (哈密 厅) was established in these places in 1759. In 1884, when Xinjiang Province was formed, the Commissariat Hami was upgraded to "directly managed" (哈密 直隶 厅). After the Xinhai Revolution, the directly controlled commissariat Hami was transformed in 1913 into the Hami county (哈密), directly subordinate to Urumqi. In 1934, the Hami Administrative District was formed, and the Hami county was subordinated to the Hami administrative district. In 1935, six districts of the Hami County, which lie north of the Tien Shan Mountains, were allocated to a separate Yiwu County. In 1949, the Hami Administrative Region was transformed into the Hami Special District.
In 1961, by the resolution of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the Hami settlement was assigned to the Hami city county, but in November of the following year it was returned to its previous status. In January 1977, the State Council of the People's Republic of China decided to create a separate city county from the village of Hami and the adjacent territory (total area 58 km²), and by March city authorities were formed. In September 1983, the PRC State Council decided to disband Hami County, and by May 1984 the transfer of the territory of the former Hami County to the city county of Hami was completed.
In 2016, the Hami district was transformed into a city district, and the former Hami city district became a district of Yizhou in its composition.
