The Old Town (Altstadt, German: Altstadt ) in Zurich ( ) is the urban district No. 1 with an area of 1.8 km² and covering the entire historical part of the city of Zurich.
Until 1893, when neighboring communes, now urban districts No. 2 to No. 12, were attached to it, the borders of the Zurich municipality corresponded to the boundaries of this district.
The population of the Old Town as of December 31, 2005 was 5 572 inhabitants, which corresponds to 1.5% of the total population of Zurich.
Administrative Division
Historically, the Old Town is divided into Small Town on the left bank of the Limmat River and Big Town on the right bank. Administratively, the Old Town as an urban district since 1971 has been divided into 4 districts: Rathouse (“Town Hall”), Hochschulen (“University”), Lindenhof and City (“City”).
The Lindenhof district is the historical center from which the development of the city began. On the site of the current Lindenhof district there was a Roman fortification, then the medieval castle of the Frankish kingdom of the Carolingians , and later the free imperial city of Zurich arose in this place. Lindenhof and Rathouse correspond to the historical parts of the medieval city on the east coast of Limmat, while the City and Hochschulen include urban buildings to the west and east of the medieval city walls, respectively.
