Biography
Zeferin Namunkura was born on August 26, 1886 in a small town of Chimpai, Rio Negro Province, in a large family. He was the sixth child of the leader of the people, Manuel Namunkur. In 1894, at the age of eight, Zeferin Namunkur was baptized by a Catholic priest from a monastic congregation of Salesians . Zeferin Namunkur’s father, who had the rank of Argentine army officer, wanted his son to receive a military education. Thanks to his acquaintance with the Minister of War of Argentina, father Zeferina Namunkur was able to send his son to study at the naval school. However, Zeferin Namunkur stayed at this school for only three months, because he did not like military service. Zeferin Namunkur's father turned to the former president of Argentina, Luis Saens Pena, to arrange the fate of his son, and he sent Zeferin Namunkur for a while to the monks from the Congregation of Salesians.
September 20, 1897 Zeferin Namunkura entered the Technical Academy in Buenos Aires . Zeferin Namunkur’s father wanted his son to return home after graduation to work among his people, but by that time Zeferin Namunkur decided to become a priest. In 1904, he went to Italy, accompanied by the priest Giovanni Calero. In Italy, Zeferin Namunkura continued his education at the Salesian College in Frascati. In the spring of 1905, Zeferin Namunkura fell ill with tuberculosis and died on May 11, 1905.
In 1924, his relics were transported to Argentina. A chapel was built in his homeland, in which believers living in the province of Rio Negro began to turn to Zeferin Namunkur in their prayers. Gradually, his veneration spread throughout Argentina.
