Biography

Frederica Sagor was the youngest child in a Jewish family of emigrants from Russia ( Moscow ). Her mother, Agnes Zagorskaya (nee Litvinova), from a merchant family, was a graduate of Moscow University and at one time studied at the Moscow Conservatory in piano. [2] Mother’s brother, Alexander (Samuil) Aleksandrovich Litvinov (1861-1933) - Russian violinist and conductor of the Society of Orchestra, Chamber and Vocal Music Lovers created by him, the first honored artist of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (1926). Frederic's father, Arnold Zagorsky, who moved to Moscow from the Pale of Settlement , was forced to leave the city after the command of Governor General Sergey Alexandrovich on October 15, 1892, which forbade the right of residence to Jews without a permanent residence permit. Thus the whole family (parents with three daughters) ended up in New York. Spoken language in the family and after moving remained Russian .

In 1923 she graduated from Columbia University with a degree in journalism. However, all her creative life she was a screenwriter. In 1923, she began working as a screenwriter for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio , then Frederick went on to work for the Paramount Pictures film studio.

As a screenwriter and playwright, Frederick Maas worked with such Hollywood actors as Greta Garbo , John Gilbert , Barbara Kent , Emil Jannings .

Among her most significant works are films such as “The Plastic Age ” ( 1925 ) (starring Clara Bow ), “ Flesh and the Devil ” with Greta Garbo, “ The Way of All Flesh ”, for participation in which the actor Emil Jannings received his first Oscar .

The last film in Segor’s career was the film “The Terrible Miss Pilgrim ” (based on her 1941 story “Miss Pilgrim's Progress”) with Betty Grable , and this was also the first film in the filmography of Marilyn Monroe .

Personal life

In 1927, Frederick married screenwriter Ernest Maas ( 1892 - 1986 ), the marriage lasted almost 60 years, but they did not have children.

At 99, Frederick published a book that she titled similarly to her last film, in which she described the era of black-and-white and color cinema, as well as the history of silent and sound cinema of Hollywood .

Longevity records

On October 1, 2009, Frederick Maas became the second oldest person in the state of California , where she lived.

Frederick Maas died on January 5, 2012 at the age of 111 years and 6 months, at the time of death she was in 44th place in the list of oldest living people.
