The middle Aletsch glacier has a length of 5.4 km and an area of about 8.31 km² (as of 1973) [1] . It originates on the eastern slope of Alechhorn and the southern slope of Dreiekhorn ( German: Dreieckhorn , 3811 m) at an altitude of about 3700 meters above sea level from a wide firn field on a slope with a slope of about 36 °. Then it flows southeast into the valley between Gisshorn ( German: Geisshorn , 3740 m) in the west and Olmenhorn ( German: Olmenhorn , 3314 m) in the east. Near Gisshorn, it is fed by another firn field. The tongue of the glacier ends at an altitude of 2350 meters above sea level. The melt water flowing out from under the tongue of the Middle Aletsch glacier is absorbed after about 1 km by the body of the Big Aletsch glacier .
The Mittelalech glacier has long been one of the branches of the Great Aletsch Glacier. But due to climate warming and the retreat of alpine glaciers in the early 1970s, he broke away from the Great Aletsch Glacier.
World Heritage
In December 2001, the Middle Aletsch Glacier, along with the Great Aletsch Glacier, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Jungfrau – Aletsch – Bichhorn region .
