After forcing the Danube, the main forces of the Russian army were divided. The IX Corps (two infantry divisions, three cavalry regiments, the Caucasian Cossack brigade, 92 field guns) launched a siege of Nikopol ( Niğbolu ). On June 26 (July 8), the corps commander, Lieutenant General Kridener, received an order from the Commander-in-Chief of the acting army Nikolay Nikolaevich to take Nikopol, for which 30 field and 33 siege guns were additionally transferred to him.
The garrison of the fortress of Nikopol totaled about 8 thousand people. The artillery of the fortress consisted of 113 field and serf guns.
At 4 a.m. on July 3 ( 15 ), 1877 , the bombing of the fortress began. In the afternoon, the Russians knocked out the Turks from several redoubts surrounding the fortress. At dawn on July 4 ( 16 ), 1877 , an assault on the citadel was to begin, but the Nikopol garrison threw a white flag . Hassan Pasha with his entourage handed the key to Nikopol to General N.P. Kridener. 7 thousand Turkish soldiers surrendered. The commandant of the fortress was Arkady Stolypin
