Description

Butterflies of medium or large size, similar to butterflies from another family - Saturnia . The wingspan ranges from 25 to 100 mm. Sexual dimorphism - females are larger than males. The body of the butterflies is covered with hairs. The color of the wings is usually brown or brown, brown-red with red wings, some species are painted yellow. Often the pattern on the front wings is represented by dark transverse stripes. The front wings of a number of species with a sharp apex, and the outer edge is more or less sickle-shaped. There is no radial vein, so R1 is separated from Rs. The hind wings are more rounded, with a blunt apex. The body is long and cylindrical. The head is relatively small. Antennae are rather short (approximately 1 \ 3-1 \ 4 of the length of the fore wing), more developed in males. Proboscis is not developed. Legs are poorly developed.

Systematics

The family consists of four subfamilies and the unplaced Ganissa group. The subfamily Eupterotinae has about 11 genera , the Ganissa group has about 10 genera, the Janinae subfamily includes about 16 genera, the Panacelinae subfamily consists of one genus, which includes 3 species, and the Striphnopteryginae subfamily includes 15 genera.
