Biography
Born in Basel in the family of a furniture maker. Having studied for five years in the specialty of his father, he decided to study architecture. From 1967 to 1979, he worked in the monument conservation department of the canton of Graubünden , engaged in restoration, planning and consultations. In 1979 , leaving the post of construction consultant under the government of the canton, the architect founded his own office in the commune of Haldenstein , where he still works with 15 employees. Zumtor is taken only for those projects that are dear to him.
The following years brought him about a dozen significant awards, and in 2008 he received the Japanese Imperial Prize , one of the most prestigious in the world. Peter Zumthor awarded the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Architectural Medal. Peter Zumtor received the prestigious Pritzker Prize of 2009. The jury of the award, consisting of eminent architects, writers, designers and scientists, noted its “eternal structures, nourished from the cultures in which they originated, and which show respect for others.” “His buildings have a significant presence, and again and again they show us that the modesty of approach and the courage of the overall result do not exclude each other. Simplicity and moderation live side by side with power, ”the jury said in a decree.
The award-winning architect recalled that he always creates the entire building. “I hope this award gives hope to young people: they will say that if Zumthor does this, then we should be able to create an entire building, and not draw only details and facades” [1] .
