Biography

Carl Ludwig Burnet came from the famous Frankfurt family of bankers, the son of Jacob Baruch , president (Baumeister) of the Frankfurt Jewish community [1] . He spent his childhood in the Frankfurt ghetto. Since 1803 he studied law in Halle and Heidelberg . In 1808, received his doctorate from the University of Giessen.

In 1818, Burnet converted to Lutheranism and assumed the name Ludwig. However, he was not guided by religious beliefs, but by a desire to gain access to broader social activities. In the same year, he founded the magazine Di Vage .

Burnet is one of the creators of the feuilleton genre. His feuilleton, in which he scourged the bureaucratic institutions of Frankfurt , soon aroused the discontent of the political authorities, and in 1821 he had to refuse to edit the journal.

In 1830, due to constant obstacles posed by the Frankfurt police, Karl Ludwig Burnet was forced to move to Paris , where he was considered the recognized leader of political emigration.

The Jewish question has always occupied Burnet. In his opinion, the most significant contribution of Jewry to world civilization was that it gave rise to the high ideals of Christianity . With the emergence of the latter, Jews ceased to exist as a nation, and now their mission is to implement the ideas of cosmopolitanism, to set an example of non-national existence for all of humanity. Burnet is considered to be the most significant after the Heinrich Heine by the German Jewish writer of the 19th century .

In 1843, the writer’s compatriots erected a fine monument by the sculptor David at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, and in 1877 the same was erected in the hometown of Carl Ludwig Burne [2] . In 1852, in honor of Ludwig Burnet, German colonists named the settlement they created in Texas - Berne (now the city and the district center) [3] .
