Distribution and Ecology
In nature , the range of the species covers North America - from North Carolina to Alabama . It grows in the Allegany mountains [2] .
Botanical Description
A tree up to 12 m high, with a wide crown and trunk with a diameter of up to 35 cm. The bark is thick, dark brown, smooth. Shoots , leaf stems, inflorescence axis, pedicels and calyx sticky from glandular pubescence.
Leaves up to 20 cm long, from 13-25 (up to 27) leaflets; leaflets oblong-elliptic, 2.5-4 cm long, up to 2 cm wide, at the apex more or less obtuse and with a short spike, rounded or widely wedge-shaped at the base, pubescent at an early age, later glabrous from above, bright green, from below grayish, hairless or pubescent. Stipules turned into awl-shaped spines 4–5 mm long or falling.
The flowers are pink, about 2 cm long, collected 6-15 in almost upright brushes 5-10 cm long and 4-5 cm wide. Calyx up to 7 mm long, 5 mm wide, dark red, with narrow triangular teeth.
Beans are oblong-linear, 5.5–9 cm long, up to 12 mm wide, at the end with a nose curved upward, sparse glandular-bristly. Seeds are oblong-bud-shaped, about 4 mm long, 2 mm wide, smooth, brown, matte.
It blooms in May - June, sometimes a second time in August. Fruits in August.
Meaning and Application
In culture since 1791 .
In gardens and parks are used infrequently, in single copies and in groups.
