Biography
Zakarias Signeus Jr. was born into the family of the Lutheran Bishop Porvo Zakarias Signeus Sr.. He studied at the University of Turku with Professor N. G. Portman. He was ordained a pastor in 1782, married in 1792, but the marriage soon broke up. Signeus remarried in which he had 10 children.
He supported the accession of Finland to Russia, which had a positive effect on his future church career. In 1819, Signeus Jr. was elected to the same department that his father had once occupied, but after 9 months, at the invitation of Alexander I, he moved to St. Petersburg .
Here he led the reorganized Lutheran Church of Russia, becoming its first bishop. Signeus received from the emperor signs of bishop dignity, which the bishops of the Orthodox Church had: miter, staff and vestments. With the help of the Archbishop of Finland, Jacob Tengström, the bishop began a reorganization of church life in both St. Petersburg and Lutheran parishes throughout Russia. However, the bishop was most active in the state of Ingrian parishes .
Signeus took part in the preparation of a new church law, but died in 1830 (the law on church governing bodies was adopted in 1832). The funeral service was held in the Swedish church of St. Catherine .
