NetWare Core Protocol

NetWare Core Protocol ( NCP ) is a network protocol that is used by some Novell products, is an add-on to IPX or TCP / IP protocol and is used to organize the exchange between a workstation and a file server. NCP is mainly connected and used in the NetWare operating system , but parts of it have been implemented on other platforms such as Linux , Windows NT, and Unix .

Description

The protocol is used to access files, a print service, a directory service, clock synchronization , messaging , remote command execution and other network services functions for organizing an exchange between a workstation and a file server. Novell eDirectory uses NCP to synchronize data changes between servers in the directory service tree.

Principle of Operation

The NCP protocol is implemented in NetWare 3.x at the system level. NetWare 4.x offers the NCP Extension API for accessing the NCP protocol from applications on workstations and from NLM modules under development. For the exchange of data between programs over the NCP protocol, IPX packets with socket number 0x0451 and packet type 17 are used.

Communication between the workstation and the file server, which use the NCP protocol API, is usually organized as follows:

  • The NLM module registers any of its functions as an extension of the NCP;
  • the program on the workstation or file server communicates with NetWare and obtains the required NCP extension identifier;
  • the program on the workstation or file server uses the registered function of the NLM module as a remote procedure, transferring the initial data to it and receiving the processing results.
