Biography
Luys de Ger was born into an aristocratic family and since 1851 was a member of the Rixdag estates. Having received a law degree, in 1855 he became a member of the Götaland County Court of Appeal, and in 1858 he became the first Minister of Justice - one of the two leaders of the Swedish government.
De Ger was one of the initiators of the reform introducing the bicameral elected Riksdag , of which he was elected a member of the first convocation in 1867 . In 1870 he resigned, but in 1875 he returned to the post of first minister of justice, and on March 20, 1876 he became the first prime minister of the country, although until 1879 he retained the post of minister of justice. On April 19, 1880, Luys de Ger resigned after the failure of his proposed arms reform.
From 1881 to 1888, he served as Chancellor of Uppsala and Lund Universities .
From 1862 until his death, Luys de Ger was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Swedish Academy .
Luis de Ger also left behind a number of memoirs and works on economics.
The eldest of his three sons, Gerhard Luys (1854–1935), was the Prime Minister of Sweden in 1920–1921.
