The Prometheus Award is the annual award given by the Libertarian Futurist Society [1] for free-thinking ( libertarian ) science fiction works, where there is a “study of the possibilities of a free future, the struggle for human rights (including personal and economic freedom), dramatization of the eternal conflict between individuals and government, a critical analysis of the tragic consequences of abuse of power ” [2] . The prize was established in 1979 by L. Neil Smith, but regular presentations began only in 1982.

The prize is awarded in three categories:
- “Best novel” ( Best novel );
- “Hall of Fame” ( Hall of Fame );
- Special Award ( Special Award ; not awarded every year).
The prize is a gold coin as a symbol of free trade, mounted on an engraved memorial stand [3] . Paul Wilson, the first prize winner, received a coin worth 2.5 thousand dollars. Since 1982, the weight of the gold coin has been half an ounce for the Best Romance category and an eighth of an ounce for the Hall of Fame. Since 2001, the weight of the coin for the category "best novel" is one ounce [4] .
