Ephonetics

Ephonetics (Greek ἐκφωνέω - to exclaim, ἐκφώνησις - exclamation) —– in worship there is a way of voicing the texts of the Holy Scripture, not intended for singing. The peculiarity is that the text is read in chant, by increasing and decreasing the pitch in separate syllables. In this way, it is convenient to single out the most significant semantic turns in the text. A striking example of ephonetics is when they read the gospel at worship.

Ephonetics (from Greek: “ekfonessis” is an exclamation). The psalmody is also included here. In antiquity, in the Russian Church (and among the Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Romanians to this day), econetics was subject to certain rules and intonational turns in reading (especially Holy Scripture) were precisely established by tradition. There was even a special non-linear notation, the so-called phonetic, which was recorded on the written material of intonation during exclamations and reading (by the way, ekfonetiches are already in the Ostromir Gospel — the oldest Russian monument in 1057). By this, the intonational tradition of reading was protected from unauthorized, “personal taste” distortions. The tradition of ephonesis and psalmody is very ancient and goes back to the first centuries of Christianity and perhaps stretches even further to the Old Testament church services (as you know, Jews still have special intonations for reading the Holy Scriptures, different for each of his books). Significantly, all Christian Churches that have a hierarchy of apostolic succession have psalmody and ephonetics, which in many respects coincide with the psalmody and ephonetics of the Russian Orthodox Church. We note at the same time that certain rules and laws of traditional psalmodia and ekphonetics do not at all require slavish tracing of any sample. Within traditional forms, the personality of the reader may manifest; the boundaries of this manifestation are indicated, on the one hand, by the rules, on the other hand, by the church culture of the reader.
