Biography

Yakov Motelevich (later Yakov Markovich and Jacques) Roitfeld was born in Akkerman, one of five children (four brothers and a sister) in the family of the owner of the grocery and mosquito shop of Motel Ititsikovich Roitfeld. He received his law degree in St. Petersburg , practiced law there, then in Baku and Odessa , from where he moved to Austria in the early 1920s , to Germany in 1925 , and to Paris after the Nazis came to power. [2]

He began to engage in cinematography in Germany, along with screenwriter Jacob Kompaneets (1906-1956), with whom he continued to collaborate in France in the 1950s. He was the chief administrator at the Paris Pigalle Theater. During the German occupation during World War II, he fled with his family to Juan-les-Pins (in the Alpes-Maritimes department), then took refuge in the apartment of the police commissioner in Nice .

Among his paintings are Long Teeth and She and Me with Louis de Funes (1952), Count of Monte Cristo with Jean Mare (1954), Please Not Now , directed by Roger Vadim with Brigitte Bardot in the title role (1961), “ Ases in the Sky ” with Malcolm MacDowell and Christopher Plummer (1976).
