Sports career
First years of career
Roberta Vinci started playing tennis at the age of six. She held her first match at a professional tournament at the age of 14, in 1997 ( ITF tournament in Galatin , Italy), and in 1998 she won two ITF tournaments together with compatriot Flavia Pennetta . In 1999, together with Pennetta, she won at the French Open among girls. In the same year, she won her first ITF singles tournaments.
2001–2003
In February 2001, in Doha, Vinci, together with French Sandrine Testu, won her first title in the tournament of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) . In April, holds the first match for the Italian national team . Having won a doubles match against the Croats with Gloria Pizzicini , she began a series of eight wins in a row, which was interrupted only in 2005 (Vinci had 16 victories for the national team, only 15 of them in doubles and only one defeat). Reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open , also with Testus, allows her to become one of the hundred best tennis players in the world in doubles. In the future, they reach the semifinals of the US Open and the finals of the first category tournament in Zurich , and Vinci is already among the top 50 tennis players in doubles. As a result, they with Testu conquer a place in the final tournament of the WTA-tour , but in the quarterfinals are inferior to Kare Black and Elena Lihovtsevoy .
2002 Vinci started successfully, reaching the final of two tournaments in doubles, including a category I tournament in Tokyo . She also reached Testiou again to the quarterfinals of the French Open. By July 8, she reached the highest in the career of the twelfth line in the ranking of tennis players in doubles. In June in Tashkent she advanced to her first semi-final of the WTA singles tournament. But then followed a series of failures, and the second half of the season, Vinci actually missed, having played in only four tournaments and scored only one victory. 2003 she almost completely spends in ITF tournaments and by June leaves out one hundred of the strongest in doubles. Yet, over the course of a year, she manages to reach the WTA semi-finals twice and win one ITF tournament in pairs. She won the same tournament in October in singles.
2004—2007
In 2004, in the game Vinci begins a new rise. With Emmanuel Gagliardi from Switzerland, she reaches the quarterfinals of the Australian Open , beating two seeded pairs along the way and losing only to the first pair of the tournament, Ruano-Pascual - Suarez . At the French Open, she’s second time in her career reaching the semifinals of the Grand Slam tournament . Sandrine Testou, with whom they defeated three seeded couples, helps her again with this, until Ruano and Suarez again stand in their way. In June, after winning the 29th racket of the world Natalie Deshi in Birmingham , for the first time in her career she crosses the top 100 in singles. With Tatyana Garbin, Vinci represents Italy at the Athens Olympics , where they beat the Australian couple , but in the second round they hit Spaniards Martinez and Ruano, second sowed in the tournament, and drop out of the fight, while their rivals continue the path to the silver medals. After the US Open, Vinci returns to the top 50 tennis players in pairs. The ending of the season, however, did not work again: in pairs, the Vinci became the last US Open, and in singles she finished the year in ITF tournaments and again leaves the first hundred of the rankings.
In 2005, in Eastbourne, Vinci won the first singles victory over her rival from the top ten: in the quarterfinal she defeats the tenth racket of the world Anastasia Myskina . In total, she won six victories in this tournament, including three in qualifying, and reached the semifinals, moving from the 111th line in the ranking to the 64th. Immediately after that, she reaches the third round at Wimbledon , in the first round, defeating the seeded twenty-third Ai Sugiyama . In pairs, the season is unsuccessful for her as a whole, and even her second career victory in the WTA tournament (in Portoroz , Slovenia ) only helps her to return to the top 100. For the first time in her career, she ends the season at a higher position in singles (where she is in the top 50) than in the doubles.
2006 Vinci began with the third in his career doubles title WTA, won in Canberra . Later, she successfully played in the I category tournaments in Berlin and Rome , advanced to the third round at the French Open and regained her place among the top 50 in doubles. In singles, she reached the third round at the Australian Open, beating the twenty-seventh Marion Bartoli on the road. In July, she reached the semifinals of the WTA tournament in Palermo, but later the unsuccessful game did not allow her to keep her place in the top 100. But Vinci achieved important success in the national team of Italy, winning the Federation Cup. In the final match against Belgium, she and Francesca Schiavone brought Italy a decisive point, defeating Justine Henin and Kim Flipkens , who failed to continue the fight with the score 3-6, 6-2, 2-0 in favor of the Italians.
In 2007 comes the breakthrough in the Vinci single career. First, in Tokyo, she won the 18th racket of the world, Daniel Hantuhov , and then in February in Bogota for the first time in her career, she reached the final of the tournament in singles and won it, having won consecutively the rivals, sown under the fourth, second and first number. After Bogota, she is in the top 50, but until the end of the season she is unable to gain a foothold there. In pairs, she plays three times in the finals, and twice in tournaments of the first category, with Tatiana Garbin, but since the French Open, they are followed by failures, and they never make it into the final tournament of the season. The year of Vinci finishes in the Federation Cup final, but unlike the last draw, she never had a chance to uncover the racket, since the Russian team defeated the Italian women 4-0 after a single match.
2008–2010
2008 turned out to be unsuccessful for Vinci: she did not achieve success either in singles or in doubles. She represented Italy at the Olympics in Beijing , but together with Mara Santangelo, in the very first round they faced the first planted Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina and lost 1-6, 6-3, 5-7. At the end of the year, she was far beyond the first hundred in doubles and with difficulty, thanks to the victory in the ITF tournament, returned to her in singles. In 2009, in Vinci couples with three different partners, four times reach the semifinals of WTA tournaments and return to the top 100. In singles in Barcelona, she wins her second career tournament, beating two seeded opponents on the way to the title, and reaches the third round at Wimbledon. In September in Tokyo, she won another victory over her rival from the top ten rankings, which was her former partner Pennetta, at that time the tenth racket of the world. In the Federation Cup, she went to the finals for the third time with the national team, but this time she didn’t have a chance to play in it, because now the Italian national team, after the first two days of the final, completely defeated the American team.
In February 2010, Vinci with compatriot Sarah Errani for the first time in more than two years reached the final of the WTA tournament in doubles, but there they were defeated in three sets by Polona Herzog and Barbora Zaglavova-Strytsova . The two March American super tournaments (in Miami and Indian Wells ) bring Roberta two thirds rounds. Last year's title in Barcelona could not be defended - having beaten, among others, Rezai and Dulgheru , the Italian reached the final, where she could not oppose her compatriot Francesca Schiavone - 1-6, 1-6.
In a pair, the Errani / Vinci duet for three tournaments before the April meeting of the Federation Cup against the Czechs gives a series of 10 victories in 11 meetings, taking on titles in Marbella and Barcelona (the pair Martinez Sanchez / Llagostera Vives was replayed in Catalonia ). In the future, matters in singles didn’t go well - before the Japanese Premier 5 tournament, Robert even had a negative balance of meetings (having lost more matches than won victories). In Tokyo, there was a certain surge - the Italian is qualifying and comes to the third round (passing Nadezhda Petrova along the way), then Robert passes from the qualification to the second round at the tournament in Beijing (passing Svetlana Kuznetsova along the way). Returning to Europe, Vinci continued a series of good results - first reaching the semifinals in Linz , and then winning the tournament in Luxembourg . Together with Errani during this time it is possible to achieve two semi-finals (in 's-Hertogenbosch and Linz ) and one quarter-final (in Montreal ).
2011—2013
Before Australian Open, Robert plays a couple of tournaments, having performed most successfully in Hobart : in the singles category, future future tournament winner Jarmila Groth stops Robert in the quarterfinals, and in a couple of them the duet with Sarah Errani supplements his museum with another champion trophy. At the Australian Grand Slam tournament, the Italian is already eliminated at the start, losing in a bitter struggle in the decisive set of Alicia Molik .
After the January tournaments, Vinci, as part of the national team, first defeats the Australian team in the first round match of the Federation Cup, and then comes to the semifinals of the competition in Pattaya , beating Anu Ivanovich in the course. Parallel title taken simultaneously. In the future, Robert for a long time fairly quickly finished their tournament performances. A qualitative improvement occurred at the end of April, when the Italian managed to play well at the competition in Barcelona : winning one after the other five matches, which won the first title of the season. Following, despite some minor health problems, Vinci comes to the third round in the competition in Madrid and on Roland Garros . Paired achievements during this period include the final of the same tournament in Barcelona and the third round in the French Grand Slam tournament. The grass season is also very successful: Italian first wins the main prize of the competition in the Dutch Hertogenbosch , and then comes to the third round at Wimbledon , where she is stopped by the future winner of the tournament, Peter Kvitova .
In the doubles category, the final was won at a competition in Birmingham , and also a native of Taranto goes to the third round at the same Wimbledon . In July, Vinci again returns to the ground for several tournaments: the title was won in Budapest , and Robert's Palermo is inferior in the second round. In both competitions in the decisive matches, the Italian was opposed by one of the discoveries of that season - Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu ; and if in Hungary it was not easy for an Italian to beat her, then in Italy I was more than confidently taking revenge. The Italian, however, won back in the doubles competition, where she won the title. It was quite successful for Roberta and the US Open Series : she reached the quarterfinal at the tournament in Toronto , knocking out Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovich , and at the American Grand Slam again reached the third round. The twin part of this segment is very rich in achievements: Errani and Vinci reach the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and the US Open , the semi-finals in Carlsbad and the finals in New Haven .
In 2012, Roberta Vinci declared herself as a double player. It all started at the Australian Open , where a tennis player from Italy paired with another Italian and close friend - Sarah Errani - reached the final, but lost to the leading Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova - Vera Zvonareva . But later the Italian couple dominated the clay courts, beating Acapulco , Barcelona , Madrid , Rome and, finally, the French Open . At the French Open, Sarah and Robert, sown second, beat two Russian couples at once: Elena Vesnina / Ekaterina Makarova and Maria Kirilenko / Nadezhda Petrova , winning the first title in a Grand Slam tournament. This victory allowed the 29-year-old Vinci for the first time in his career to become the fourth racket of the world in doubles. Later, Vinci and Errani reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in London (where they lost to future champions Williams sisters), and at the US Open, where they were sown second, won the second title for the season in Grand Slam tournaments, bringing the total number won from the beginning year tournaments until eight. Vinci herself first reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament In October, Vinci for the first time in her career became the first racket of the world in doubles. Toward the end of the season, she twice refused to participate in tournaments because of an injury to her right hand, but at the end of the year she appeared in the WTA Champions Tournament in Sofia and reached the semi-finals. In the Final WTA tournament in doubles, they were first sown with Errani, but in the very first game they lost to the future champions Kirilenko and Petrova. Nevertheless, Vinci finished the year with the rank of the first racket of the world in pairs, scoring 53 wins in a season with only 11 defeats.
In the 2013 season, the stability of Roberta's singles performances is still increasing: she regularly makes her way to the Grand Slam tournaments in at least the third round, winning 16 matches in a season in the series and reaching the US Open for the second year in a row, where stopped flavia pennetta . The Italian felt more confident in the matches with the Top20 players in the ranking. Often making their way into the high stages of the competition, not only thanks to successful grids, but also by playing up to the high rating opponents. So in February she reached the semifinals of the competition in Dubai , consistently beating Svetlana Kuznetsova , Samantha Stosur and Angelica Kerber . In the summer, Vinci defeated an unsuccessful series of games with Sarah Errani , twice defeating his partner in a pair, who had lost to five games in a row. In the second half of the season, Robert was several times in one or two wins from joining the Top10 single ranking, but each time the rivals were stronger, and the eleventh line conquered in mid-June remained its best result. The Errani / Vinci Alliance paired another good season, retaining the status of the first pair of the world during the whole year. In January, Robert and Sarah took another step toward the career Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open . At the end of the season, the Italians made another attempt to play at the Final Tournament , but, like a year ago, they lost at the start. In the same year, their alliance played allowed the national team to re-enter the Federation Cup final: by joint efforts, they first defeated the US team, led by Barbara Lepchenko , and then the main team of the current two-time champion - the Czech team . Having won the Russian final, Vinci won her fourth Federation Cup with the Italian team.
2014—2015
In 2014, Roberta’s single-player results showed a significant decline; at the start of the season, she issued a six-game lose-lose series and only in early March for the first time was able to leave the tournament not in the starting game. Relative progress in the results was achieved only by July, when Vinci twice visited the finals of the international series . In the fall, it was possible to hold a good and more prestigious competition - at a major tournament in Beijing, the Italian reached the quarterfinals, beating Agnieszka Radwanska . The pair year was much more stable, though it didn’t go without recessions, costing Sarah and Robert losses for several weeks of leadership in the ranking, but gradually their results improved, and the two closest rivals, on the contrary, fell into a protracted crisis. In the first three Grand Slam tournaments, the Italians played in the finals three times, winning the Australian Open and filling out the career Grand Slam at Wimbledon . In total, they won five titles over the year (including two Grand Slam tournaments) and lost three times in the finals (including their main rivals Xie Shuwei and Peng Shuai at the French Open in 19 tournaments). For the third time in a row, Vinci and Errani finished the year as the strongest couple in the world and for the second time shared the first place in the WTA doubles ranking, becoming only the second pair in the history of women's professional tennis, which succeeded (after Kara Black and Liesel Huber in 2007- 09th years). They also became the fifth female pair in the Open Era , which won the joint career Grand Slam [2] .
The duo of Vinci and Errani collapsed in early 2015, after they won the tournament in Auckland and dropped out of the fight in the third round of the Australian Open, and then lost in the decisive match to the quarterfinals of the Federation Cup to Frenchwoman Christine Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia . Vinci spent the rest of the season with the Italian Karin Knapp , but this couple didn’t get anywhere else beyond the third round either. In the singles, Vinci scored the final in the WTA tournament in Nuremberg (where, after beating the 11th racket of the world, Kerber lost to Knapp), then she acted unsuccessfully for a while, losing in the first round, but returned to form by the middle of summer, having reached to the quarterfinals, first in Istanbul and then in Toronto. At the premier tournament in Toronto, she beat Knapp in the first round, and in the quarterfinal failed to keep the first racket of the world, Serena Williams . Soon after, however, she managed to take an unexpected revenge on Williams in the semifinals of the US Open . Serena, who won the second non-classical Grand Slam single player career, was close to becoming the first after Grand Steffi to own a single Grand Slam calendar, but suddenly lost to her rival, who in all the previous six matches she had not given a single set [3] . Vinci, who ranked 43rd in the rating before the US Open, beat only one seeded opponent on the way to the semifinals, Eugenie Bouchard’s 25th world racket, and lost to Flavia Pennetta in the purely Italian final, numbered 26th. In another semifinal - in Chinese Wuhan - Vinci reached in the fall after defeating the fourth racket of the world Petra Kvitova, and in November took part in the final WTA Elite Trophy tournament . There, she won her qualifying group and lost to the future winner Venus Williams in the semifinals, having finished the season in 15th place in the ranking.
Retirement
Continuing to develop the successes achieved at the end of 2015, Vinci reached the third round at the Australian Open in January of the new season, and won the St. Petersburg tournament in mid-February . The Petersburg Ladies Trophy , having won the title for the first time in a tournament in a premier class tournament [4] . In February 2016, for the first time in her career, Roberta entered the top ten of the single WTA ranking and by May reached the seventh position in it. However, the defeat in the first round of the French Open from the 65th racket of the world Katerina Bondarenko marked the end of the advance in the ranking, and after the defeat in the quarterfinals of the US Open, Angelica Kerber Vinci, who gained the best form, dropped from eighth to 15th place in it. In the doubles, her performances this season were kept to a minimum (the best result was the quarter finals of the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro with Sarah Errani), which led to the first departure from the first hundred rankings since 2008. As the season progressed, it was rumored that Vinci would soon end his playing career, but the athlete herself said that she intended to continue to perform [5] .
In 2017, Vinci performed only in singles, but even there her best results were outs in the third round of WTA tournaments. After the third quarter finals - in June in Mallorca - until the end of the season she took part only in six tournaments, in which she managed to win only one meeting, and ended the season ahead of schedule in September. Italian year finished outside the first hundred rankings and singles. At the end of the year, she announced that she was planning to end her gaming career after the 2018 Italian Open Championship [6] . At the beginning of the new season, Vinci twice (in St. Petersburg and Budapest) managed to break through the qualifying sieve into the main draw of WTA tournaments, but in the premier tournaments she was no longer qualifying. After losing Alexandra Krunich in three sets in the first round of the Italian Open, Vinci, who was 191st in the rating at the time, confirmed that it was the last match in her 19-year career [7] .
