Description
Body length - up to 31 cm, the bird has a red beak, black or blue head. The back, wings and tail are dark green, the neck and underside are reddish brown. The male has blue and the female has chestnut cheeks. In young birds, the cheeks are also chestnut, the beak is yellowish.
Distribution
This is an endemic species that lives only in Sulawesi . It inhabits humid tropical lowland forests up to an altitude of 900 m above sea level.
Behavior and Reproduction
This is a calm, lonely bird, of which little is known. Probably nests in March or April, nesting in a termite mound , earthen hole or tree hollow. It feeds on leg - bugs and bugs .
Subspecies
- Actenoides m. monachus lives in the north of Sulawesi and on several neighboring islands. The head is dark blue, the chest is dark reddish-brown, the belly is light.
- Actenoides m. capucinus lives in the south and east of the island. Head black, Chest and belly reddish-brown.
