Story
The young Russian aristocrat Alexander Sergeyevich Griboedov, who participated in the establishment of the Turkmanchay peace, arrives in the capital St. Petersburg , where he enjoys success in society, leads a dissolute life, and in the meantime develops a plan for Russian colonization and economic development of Transcaucasia . Tsar Nikolai is more interested in Griboedov as a diplomat, able to demand from the Persians payment of the indemnity delayed by them. Griboedov is also interested in receiving money - he hopes that they will go to the development of Georgia .
Shortly before his fateful departure to Persia, Griboedov married the Georgian princess Nina Chavchavadze . Soon the spouses will find out: they will have a child. But the debt was higher than love, and Griboedov was forced to go to Tehran to negotiate directly with Shah Feth Ali .
On arrival in Tehran, Griboedov behaved defiantly insolently; his behavior at the highest audience shocked the Persians. To this was added the intrigues of political and personal enemies: the Shah warlords of Alayar Khan and the Russian deserter Samson Khan , as well as British diplomats. On the morning of January 30 (old style) in 1829, a crowd gathered at the main mosque of Tehran and with warlike cries went to the building of the Russian diplomatic mission.
During the assault on the embassy, held with the connivance of the authorities , all its employees were killed, except for the first secretary Maltzov hiding under the carpets. Mirza Yakub , the disgraced chief eunuch of the shah’s harem, was also hacked, who was under the protection of the mission. The Shah sends ambassadors to St. Petersburg with an apology and presents to the Russian Emperor Nicholas I, among other gifts, the famous Shah diamond from the crown of the Great Mughals. Interested in the neutrality of the Persians at the height of the war of Russia against the Ottoman Empire , the tsar forgives them the murder of diplomats, as well as part of the indemnity claimed by the ambassador at the cost of his life.
