Know Your Enemy is considered inconsistent in musical style, having a range of songs from energetic low-end songs reminiscent of the band's earlier work to melodious pop songs, as well as disco (“Miss Europa Disco Dancer”). Also on the album, Nicky Wyre makes her debut as a vocalist (“Wattsville Blues”) and James Dean Bradfield as the author of the lyrics for the song (“Ocean Spray”).
The album got its name from the work of Sun Tzu Art of War Part III, “The Act of the Strategist,” which sounded in English: “ Thus it is said that if you know others and know yourself, you will not be in danger in a hundred battles; if you do not know others, but you know yourself, you will win and lose once; if you do not know others and you do not know yourself, you will be in danger in every single battle . ” The working title of the album was Fidel, in honor of Cuban President Fidel Castro .
