Biography
Rosamund Scott was born in the family of a naval officer. She studied first at St. Clare's Polwithen , then at Howell's School Llandaff . After school, she graduated from secretaries. During World War II , in 1942, she volunteered to join the fleet, where she served from 1943 to 1946 . In 1943 she was sent to India for service, where she remained until the end of the war. On December 7, 1946, Rosamund married textile entrepreneur Graham Pilcher ( eng. Graham Hope Pilcher ) and went with him to Scotland . Pilcher had four children: sons Robin and Mark and daughters Fiona and Philip (Pippa). Over time, the family settled in Longforgan near Dundee , where Rosamund Pilcher lived until her death. In 1996, Rosamund and her husband, Graham, celebrated their fifty-year (golden) wedding anniversary.
Creativity
In the late 1940s, under the pseudonym of Jane Frazer, Rosamund began writing stories for the publishing house of pocket love novels Mills & Boon (from the 1970s, owned by Harlequin Publishing House, which publishes a pocketbook). Rosamund used this pseudonym up to 1965 and published about ten books. The first book published by the writer under her real name was the story " And the secret to tell " ( 1955 ). Since 1965, Rosamund has been published exclusively as Rosamund Pilcher [1] .
However, the real success was waiting for her only in 1987 after the release of the family saga "Shell Gatherers" ( eng. "The Shell Seekers" ), in Russian translation - "Family Relic". Since then, the novels have been published in huge numbers: over 60 million copies of Rosamund Pilcher’s books have been sold all over the world, making her one of the most commercially successful modern writers. In 2000, the last novel, Winter Sun, was published, after which Pilcher abandoned his literary activities.
According to Rosamund Pilcher's novels, a lot of feature films, mostly television films, have been shot. In 1997, the writer was awarded the Bambi Prize. In 2002 she was awarded the rank of officer of the Order of the British Empire .
The Pilcher novels are lyrical prose about love, suffering, and friendship. Her books are distinguished by the careful elaboration of the images of the main characters, the scene of the novels, most often small towns of England and Scotland. At the same time, according to literary criticism, in the most commercially successful novels of the writer, the basic principles are money, happiness and a happy ending . A distinctive feature of Rosamund Pilcher's love stories is the absence of a description of the sex scenes, which she often replaces with ellipsis. This often became a source of teasing about Rosamund from her children [2] .
