He started wrestling in college and continued - at the university. In 1939, he became the U.S. Middleweight Champion (freestyle). 9-time US champion. From 1939 until the Olympic Games in 1952, Wittenberg did not suffer a single defeat in Helsinki .
In 1948 he became the champion of the Games in London in the weight category up to 87 kg, at the next Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki in the final bout he lost to the Swede Viking Palm and became a silver medalist.
In the years 1967-1980. in coaching at Yeshiva University and City College . In 1968 he was the head coach of the American Greco-Roman style wrestlers.
Member of the US Fighting Hall of Fame (1977).
