Textbook "Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture"

Borodina gained fame as the author of the chronologically first textbook on the course " Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture ". The textbook was published in 2002 and caused significant resonance in society and mixed assessments. According to the examination of the Department of Religious Education of the Russian Orthodox Church ,

the textbook was compiled at a fairly high cultural and methodological level, impeccably maintained in a culturological spirit, the authors draw on rich historical material, give an understanding of the impact of the Orthodox faith on the formation of Russian culture, and show the spiritual and moral significance of Orthodoxy for its further development. <...> There are currently very few such books and this development can be recommended for all secondary schools in Russia as a textbook [2] .

The head of the Center for the Study of Religions of the Russian State Humanitarian University, N. V. Shaburov, in his review expressed the opinion that the textbook “contains incorrect statements that contribute to inciting religious and ethnic hatred” [3] . Doctor of Law, Professor M. N. Kuznetsov and Doctor of Philology, Professor V. Yu. Troitsky published a review of the expert opinion of N. V. Shaburov, noting errors and indicating that N. V. Shaburov “intentionally or because of his incompetence, he distorted historical facts, “fitting” them to the result he needed - to find the provisions that arouse religious enmity in the textbook of A. V. Borodina, “Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture” [4] .

Some authors argue that the textbook contains confessional and nationalist ideas. In their opinion, the textbook identifies the concepts of “ Russian ” and “ Orthodox ”; some “new residents” (read: non-Orthodox) of Russia who “are not always as noble as Russians behave on the territory of a traditionally Orthodox state” (p. 13) [5] are offended . The textbook also says that “for Orthodox Russian people it is sacrilege to even call an icon in a temple a work of art, examine it, be enthusiastic, evaluate its artistic merits” (p. 193). Secretary of the Board of the Union of Writers of Russia A. B. Dorin , an active supporter of the introduction of the course, in a speech at a press conference "Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture - the Concept of Life and Creativity" stated [6] that " Dostoevsky ... formulated:" Russian is Orthodox. " That's all! No shorter formulas! Everything is so clear here! What is this point ... the support was Fedor Mikhailovich. Hence the deed of Alla Valentinovna [Borodina]. ”

Borodina’s textbook has been criticized by some priests who do not belong to canonical church jurisdictions. Yakov Krotov [7] noted that the author of the textbook

denounces religions whose beliefs are not shared ... Borodin does not even expound the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, but a Russian modification of the theory of German romantics ... contains paraphrases of medieval legends that have no factual basis, as well as some modern superstitions ... accustoms students (and teachers) to non-critical the perception of various rumors and pseudo-sensations from the yellow press ... the view [on the "guests" of the Russian people] contradicts the foundations of the Christian faith ... nationalism of the "bazaar type" ... classic anti-Semitic I rant ... is not illuminated the history of Russian Christian thought ...

Borodina’s textbook was somewhat edited and published as such in the second edition in 2003, although the author preserved fragments that caused the most protests [8] . A.V. Borodina herself spoke on this subject as follows:

<...> And then they tried to imagine that I had corrected the textbook a bit. Not true! I can work on the text, but what the xenophobic campaign requires will never happen. I have not and will not fix it! Orthodoxy is a tradition of faith given to the world by the Savior through his disciples and other eyewitnesses of the Atonement and Resurrection. The course "Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture" tells about this tradition and its embodiment in different forms of the most important phenomenon of human existence - culture. Neither facts nor dogmas can be corrected! That's why they are the basics, so as not to be changed. Even if all liberal showmen-theologians openly unite with xenophobes who want to reform Orthodoxy by educational means, and with developers of various other courses, at first glance similar in name, and change everything that they have the right to, the course that I am developing is “Fundamentals Orthodox culture ”- will keep its concept true to the Orthodox tradition. The basics will remain the basics [9] .

The textbook by A. V. Borodina was approved by the Coordination Council for Interaction between the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and the Moscow Patriarchate [10] , but did not receive the stamp of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and cannot be used in the general educational process [11] .
