The Copenhagen Treaty of Alliance in 1709 is a treaty of alliance concluded in Copenhagen on October 11 ( 22 ), 1709 by the Russian Ambassador , Prince Vasily Dolgoruky, and Otto Grabbe, the minister of Denmark . The agreement renewed the Russian-Danish alliance against Sweden , thus restoring the Northern Union .
The contract was a direct consequence of the Poltava victory . If before it Dolgorukiy failed to persuade Denmark to unite even with promises of large subsidies, then after Poltava, the initiative to sign the contract came from Denmark. Despite the intrigues of Anglo-Dutch diplomacy, Dolgoruky successfully completed the negotiations and the signing of the treaty, avoiding any subsidies.
