It is a road of two parallel rows of stones 25 meters wide and 2.5 km long. He ran between the Neolithic monuments - Avebury and the Wiltshire Sanctuary . A similar road, known as Beckhampton Avenue, leads west from Avebury to the Beckhampton Long Barrow [1] .
During excavations conducted by Stuart Piggott and Alexander Keiler in the 1930s , it was established that the road originally consisted of 100 pairs of vertical stones ( menhirs ), and that it dates from around 2200 BC. e. judging by the finds of burials with bell-shaped cups under some of the stones. Many of the menhirs were subsequently knocked out or completely absent.
Keiler and Piggot restored some of the fallen stones, as did Mod Cunnington , who had previously excavated in the same places. Later, some of the stones were damaged by vandals , splashing them with red paint.
