Length - 35 km, maximum width - 10 km, depth - up to 5 m [1] . Area - 224 km² [1] . The Milk River flows. Oblique Peresyp is separated from the Sea of Azov, connected to the sea by one channel.
In the period 1974-2010, the water area of Dairy Estuary was a hydrological reserve of national importance with the same name , and since 2010 it has become part of the Priazovsky National Nature Park . In 1995, the estuary was included in the list of wetlands of international importance covered by the Ramsar Convention [2] .
In recent years, the estuary is threatened with drying [3] . There are children's recreation camps on the shore.
The dairy estuary washes the shores of three districts of the Zaporizhzhya region - Akimovsky , Priazovsky and Melitopol (the length of the coastline of the latter is only a few kilometers). From the territory of the Akimovsky district , the Tashenak river flows into the estuary, from the territory of Priazovsky - the Dzhekelnya , and from the territory of Melitopolsky - the Dairy , which gives the name to the estuary.
History
Open Mode
Until the 15th century, the Dairy Estuary was the bay of the Sea of Azov . [4] .
Private mode
At the end of the 15th century, the strait connecting the estuary with the sea closed, and the Milk Estuary became a lake. Its salinity was high and unstable, ranging from 25 g / l in 1929 to 60 or more in 1939.
Half Open
In 1943, the Milk Estuary was connected to the Sea of Azov by an artificial strait. This stabilized the hydrochemical parameters, in particular, the salinity of the water. It was during these years that the maximum species diversity of fish in the estuary was noted.
Half-closed mode
Since 1974, the strait connecting the estuary with the sea has been operating irregularly. The responsibilities for clearing the strait were assigned to the Cyril fishery "Sons of the Sea", but the necessary work was practically not carried out [5] . Only in 2008, money was allocated to clear the strait [6] .
Fauna
The dairy estuary is a breeding ground for many species of birds and a spawning ground and a feeding ground for valuable marine fish species (primarily for the Black Sea and Azov pelengas ). In addition, there are 14 species of rare plants and animals listed in the Red Book of Ukraine .
