General Information

Arena ASPIRE Dome Doha

At a meeting of the IAAF Council on March 25, 2007 in Mombasa ( Kenya ), it was announced that applications had been received for hosting the 2010 championship from two countries - Turkey and Qatar . At the next meeting of the council, November 25, 2007 in Monaco , the host country was chosen - Qatar.

The 2010 Qatar World Cup was the first World Athletics Championship held in the Middle East and the second Indoor World Championship held outside Europe and North America (after the 1999 Japan Championship).

The arena for the championship was the Espeire Dome stadium in Doha , built in 2005 and accommodating 15 thousand spectators. This stadium previously hosted the 2006 Asian Games and the 2008 Asian Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Before the World Cup, on February 26, 2010, junior competitions were held in the same arena with the participation of athletes from 11 countries.

At the championship in Qatar, a new record was set for the number of participants in the indoor athletics world championships. The competition was attended by 150 countries, represented by 374 male athletes and 283 women.

The mascot of the tournament was an anthropomorphic caracal named Saham.

The official audio and video broadcast of the competitions was organized, as well as, for the first time in the history of the world championships in athletics, broadcast over the Internet.
