Pluto

Pluto ( English Pluto or English Pluto the Pup ) is an animated character who became famous in the short cartoon series of Walt Disney Studios . Most often he appeared on the screen as Mickey Mouse's domestic dog . Pluto also played an independent major role in 48 Disney cartoons in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. [1] Pluto stands out among other Disney characters in that it is not anthropomorphic , except for the unusually wide range of facial expressions or the use of front paws in some cases; he actually behaves like an ordinary dog (unlike Goofy , which is an anthropomorphic dog). Idea and creation

Pluto was initially an unimportant character until 1934, when Disney animator Norm Ferguson gave the dog the main role in the cartoon “Playful Pluto” (Shalunishka Pluto). In it, Pluto becomes entangled in sticky paper for flies , and Ferguson has significantly increased the duration of this episode. The episode became a classic, showing how Disney artists can take the simplest circumstances and make the scene funny through the character's behavior. [2]

Pluto is considered one of the first Disney characters to break the “rubber hose and circle” style that the studio relied on; the design of the dog gave her the impression of being volumetric, not flat. Plus, Pluto is one of the first cartoon characters that are shown to actually perform the thought process through animation.

Name

The puppy first appeared in the cartoon The Chain Gang (Prisoners) [3] , released in the United States on August 18, 1930. However, the puppy did not have a name. When he next appeared on October 23, 1930, in “The Picnic” (Picnic) [4] the dog was not named Pluto, but the Rover. Only in “The Moose Hunt” (Mouse Hunt) [5] , released on May 8, 1931, the dog was named Pluto the Pup (Pluto puppy). In September 1931, an illustration of this character appeared in Barrier's Hollywood Cartoons. [6]

Between assigning a name to a celestial body, which was considered the ninth planet of the solar system, Pluto , March 24, 1930 and assigning a name to a Disney character, the difference in a few months Venice Burney (later Venice Fair), who proposed the name “Pluto” for the planet, noted in 2006: “This name has nothing to do with the Disney cartoon. Mickey Mouse's dog got its name in honor of the planet, and not vice versa. " [7]

Despite the judgment that the Disney studio named the dog after the planet (and not the mystical god of the underworld), this cannot be reliably asserted. Disney's animator Ben Sharpstin said: “We decided that the nickname of the Rover was too common, so we decided to look for something else. [...] We changed it to „Pluto the Pup“, [...] but, frankly, I don’t remember why. " [8]

Popularity

Since Pluto has become an important part of the Mickey Mouse Universe, he has become one of the most popular cartoon characters. Image Pluto can be seen on almost any type of product. He also ranked fifth on the list of the most popular Disney characters after Mickey Mouse , Donald Duck , Minnie Mouse and Goofy . In the early 1950s, the public was more interested in Pluto than in its competitor among animated pets, the cat Sylvester, created by Warner Brothers . Pluto was awarded 1st place in the list of “100 Greatest Animated Pets of All Time”.

Appearances

The two nameless bloodhounds that appeared in 1930 in the cartoon with The Mickey Mouse The Chain Gang ( The Prisoners ) were similar to the one that appeared in later cartoons like Pluto the Pup, Mickey's domestic dog. [1] In “The Picnic” ( Picnic ), another cartoon with Mickey Mouse of the same year of release, the home dog Minnie appears, to which he refers: “my little rover” (my little rogue). The same dog appears as Mickey's pet in the cartoon "The Moose Hunt" (1931) and here for the first time it bears the name Pluto. [1] Since then, Pluto joins Mickey's company as a permanent character: "Mickey's Garden" ( in Mickey's garden ).

His first appearance in the comics was in the daily Mickey Mouse bands in 1931, two months after the release of the animated film The Moose Hunt. Pluto Saves the Ship, a comic book published in 1942, is one of the first Disney comics prepared to be published outside of newspaper pages. However, apart from a few mini-comics attached as a free prize to breakfast cereals in 1947 and 1951, Pluto did not have his own comic books until 1952.

Pluto also appeared on the Mickey Mouse Works, House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse animated series. It is funny that Pluto was the only one of the usual Disney characters who was not present at the reunion of their entire team in 1983 in the short cartoon Mickey's Christmas Carol , although he returned to The Prince and the Pauper ( Prince and Pauper ) (1990 d.) and Runaway Brain (Go crazy) (five years later), and also flashed in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit . In 1996, he played a bright cameo in the episode of the animated series Quack-Bryak , "The Really Mighty Ducks".

In the Kingdom Hearts video game series, Pluto is also Mickey's pet, and acts as a courier to promote his master's plans. Most of the game Kingdom Hearts II , Pluto is next to Kairi (even when she is kidnapped) because she has obvious sympathy for her. Surprisingly, during these games, Pluto appears and disappears at random moments, but none of the other characters are surprised at his sudden disappearances.

Disney Parks

In various Disney parks around the world, Pluto stands on two legs and is much more like other Disney characters.
