Distribution and Ecology

The territory of the former USSR : the entire mountainous part of Central Asia (except the Pamirs ), the Lesser Caucasus ; Asia : Turkey , Syria , Iran (northern half), Afghanistan , China (the most western parts of the Dzungaria and Kashgar ), Mongolia (Mogul Altai , the Shami river).

It grows in streams, in shady ravines; from the lower zone to 2500 m above sea level.

Botanical Description

Stems 5-10 cm tall, unbranched or weakly branched, ascending or rising at the base.

The lower leaves are petiolate or narrowed to the base, ovate, 1-15 mm long, 8-10 mm wide, thin, whole-marginal. Upper - sessile, ovoid or elliptical, sometimes semi-semi-encompassing, whole-edge or obscurely dentate.

The brush 6-12 is flowering ; bracts oblong-ovate, shorter than pedicels; pedicels are thin, sticking up, later almost horizontally deflected, longer than bracts. Calyx with widely ovoid or ovoid-elliptic, obtuse lobes, 2 mm long, 1 mm wide, slightly larger than the box; corolla blue, slightly larger than a cup. The ovary at the top is slightly ciliary.

The box is about 3.5 mm long, almost round, slightly compressed laterally. Seeds are numerous, small.
