Biography
At the age of 22, being a soldier, he left for India , where he remained from 1777 to 1823 . In 1819 he received the title of Major General . Dismissed from the army in 1823 and returned back to England and, together with John Gray, published "Illustrations of Indian Zoology" (1830-35).
During his military service in India, traveled extensively in the subcontinent; He began to collect zoological specimens, and also collected a large collection of animal drawings made by local artists.
By the time he left India, he had the largest collection of drawings of Indian animals ever assembled by one person.
The Indian artists Thomas hired were unknown, but their style was adapted to the requirements of technical illustration, using watercolors . The collection was bequeathed to the British Museum in 1835 , and later partially moved to the Museum of Natural History. The total number of drawings in the collection is about four and a half thousand.
