Biography
Jonas Staugaitis graduated from the gymnasium in Marijampole and Warsaw University (1887-1893), where he received a medical education. Later he worked as a doctor in Shakiai and was engaged in social activities.
In 1919, after independence, he moved to Kaunas , was appointed head of the medical department of the Ministry of Health. In 1920 - 1926 - director of the hospital, in 1922 - 1940 chief editor of the journal Medicina .
In 1920, Staugaitis was elected to the Sejm of Lithuania from the Lithuanian Peasant Union , In 1920 - 1922 he was deputy chairman of the party faction, June 2, 1926 was elected chairman of the Sejm.
The military coup in Lithuania (1926)
After the resignation of President Kazys Grinyus on December 17, 1926 , during the coup led by Antanas Smetona , according to the constitution, he became the acting president, the next day he resigned, transferring authority to Alexandras Stulginskis , and returned to scientific activity.
With the establishment of the communist regime, it was not affected by repression.
In 1945-1949 he worked at the Museum of Hygiene, was a member of the Medical Council of the Lithuanian SSR.
In 1949-1951 - doctor of the sanitary-epidemiological station, manager of the house of health education in Kaunas.
He was buried at the Pyatrashunsky cemetery in Kaunas.

On the house of A. Mickiewicz in Kaunas , in which J. Staugaitis lived in 1927-1952, a memorial plaque was installed.
