About the album

The original musical series was written by composer Carter Burwell , a participant in almost all Cohen films. At the time of writing the script, the brothers already had several songs in their head: “Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition Was in)” by Kenny Rogers , a cover version of “ Hotel California ” by Gipsy Kings and some songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival [2] . They asked the rest of the music for the soundtrack to select T-Bone Burnett . Songs of different genres were required, written in different periods of the development of the music industry, according to Joel, "T-Bone insisted on such exotic as Ima Sumak and Henry Mancini " [3] .

Burnett had to negotiate copyright protection for the songs of Kenny Rogers, Captain Beefheart, Gipsy Kings, Moondog and the rather little-known ballad of Bob Dylan "The Man in Me" [2] . Negotiations were especially difficult for the right to use Towns van Zandt ’s song “Dead Flowers”, playing during the final credits - former Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein , who has rights, requested 150 thousand dollars. Burnet invited Klein to view the draft materials of the film, and he liked them so much that in the end he agreed to give the song for a less round sum [2] .
