Participation in musical groups
The man known as Artaud (or Artaud, in French transcription ) Seth, was born on April 28, 1967 , presumably in France . There is no exact data on the place of his birth, nor is there any reliable information about his youth - perhaps because the musician himself likes to create an aura of mystery around his person.
In 1991, Artaud organized the gothic rock band Garden Of Delight , which promotes the ideas of the occult . The group, reorganized several times in different compositions, successfully existed until 2008 ; Artaud remained its leader, vocalist and author of most of the songs. In addition, he was a short time leader of the temporary group Chaos God ( darkwave , until 2001 ). Currently, the Artaud Set is the leader of the band Merciful Nuns , performing gothic rock in the spirit of the early Sisters of Mercy and the late Joy Division [2] .
He also collaborated with the bands Whispers in the Shadow ( remixed one of the team’s songs) and Opened Paradise ( mastered and produced their debut album, and also acted as the cover art designer ).
Personal life
Married to Java Set , bassist for Garden Of Delight , Lutherion and Merciful Nuns . Has a daughter Vivian Lilith, born in 1994 .
Hobbies, views, ideas
Artaud took his pseudonym in honor of the ancient Egyptian god Set , the lord of Chaos and natural disasters . However, he never confirmed that he attributes himself to his modern followers (the so-called Setians ). The work of Seth reflected the most diverse occult ideas, including the philosophy of Satanism , Chaos magic , thanatolatry , as well as elements of Nietzscheanism and the ideology of decadence . It is also known that Artaud is critical of the ideas of Alistair Crowley [3] , which is unambiguously demonstrated in his song “High Empress”, where the ironic question is repeated many times: “Oh Mr. Crawley, what went wrong in your head?” (“Oh Mr. Crowley, what went wrong in your head? ”). Artaud himself never considered himself to be a specific direction of occultism , which gives rise to various, but equally unconfirmed rumors. In an interview, he usually recognized himself as an atheist [4] , but sometimes he also identified himself as a pagan [3] . When asked about attitudes toward Satanism, he answered as follows:
Satanism is broadly interpreted as praising evil: a religion built on faith, the principles of which reject Christianity. I am an atheist, therefore I reject Christianity with all my heart. Does rejecting his “values” and passion for pagan cults based on ancient mythology make me a Satanist? Well, if so, then you can call me him!
Artaud Seth has a very negative attitude towards Christianity [1] , calling it “modern European paganism ” [4] , and the ideas of Pan-Americanism , in connection with which, in particular, he flatly refused to give concerts in the USA [3] .
By his own admission, the musician had a period of drug addiction in his life, which he used to “expand the horizons of consciousness,” but later he completely abandoned them.
In addition, the Artaud Set is known for its extreme secrecy and a specific sense of humor [4] . He deliberately hides or distorts certain facts of his biography in order to maintain an atmosphere of mystery around his person.
