Biography

The son of Nicolas de Neuville de Villeroix , educator of Louis XIV , bestowed upon them by the Dukes; by mother - the grandson of Marshal de Kreki and the great-grandson of the last connable of France . The future marshal was brought up with the king and thanks to this he quickly rose to the ranks. In 1695, after the death of his mentor on the battlefields, Marshal of Luxembourg , he was entrusted with command of the army operating in Flanders . Despite the complete inability shown by him here, he was sent to Italy during the war for the Spanish inheritance . There, thanks to his mistakes, the French were defeated under Chiara , and in a sudden attack by Prince Eugene on Cremona (1702), Vilrois was captured.

This circumstance, as ill-wishers noted, was even useful for his army and for France; but the allies soon released Villrois from captivity, and Louis XIV again appointed him commander in chief in Flanders. A series of defeats, experienced by the French under his command and forcing them to clear North Flanders and Brabant , finally convinced the king of the incompetence of his beloved, and since then he has ceased to entrust his armies to him. On his deathbed, he appointed Villeroix as mentor to the young Louis XV . He did not justify the trust placed in him and, due to various intrigues, was expelled from Paris to his estate.
