Jack Markell ( born Jack November 26, 1960 , Newark , Delaware ) is an American politician representing the Democratic Party . 73rd Governor of Delaware (2009—2017).

Biography
Early Years, Education, and Career
Jack Markell grew up in Newark , Delaware , where he graduated from high school. He then received a bachelor's degree in economics from Brown University and a master 's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago [1] . In his youth, he visited the Galil summer camp of the youth socialist-Zionist movement Habonim Dror [2] .
Markell was vice president of corporate development at Nextel Communications , where he introduced wireless technologies. He also held a senior position at Comcast Corporation, and was a consultant to McKinsey and Company, Inc. and banker at First Chicago Corporation [3] .
Political career
Markell was elected Treasurer of the State of Delaware in 1998, and then re-elected in 2002 and 2006 [1] . In this position, he led the development of a number of educational programs, commonly known as the “Financial Literacy Initiative”. He created Delaware Money School , which offered free courses on topics such as college money saving and retirement planning. He also collaborated with the University of Delaware, the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship, and several banks in Delaware to educate children on the basics of financial literacy.
On June 6, 2007, Markell officially announced his intention to run for governor of Delaware. On September 9, he won the primaries, gaining 51.2% of the vote [4] . In the general election, Markell easily defeated Republican William Swain Lee, beating the latter by more than 35% [5] .
Personal life
Markell is married to Karl Markell. They have two children: Molly and Michael [3] .
