Biography
Early years
John Hoeven was born in Bismarck , North Dakota , in the family of Patricia "Trish" (née Chapman) and John Henry "Jack" Juvene Jr. He has Dutch, Swedish and English roots [1] . Huven graduated with honors from Dartmouth College , where he was a member of the Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity . He then received a Master of Business Administration from Kellogg Business School, Northwestern University , and, before entering politics, worked as a banker in Minot . From 1993 to 2000, he was President and CEO of the State Bank of North Dakota.
Political career
In 2000, Hoeven was elected Governor of North Dakota from the Republican Party. He won the election of Democrat Heidi Heitkamp , gaining 55% of the vote against 45% of the opponent.
In 2004, Hoeven was re-elected for a second term. He beat his rival, Democrat , with a large margin - 71% to 28%.
On November 4, 2008, Hoeven was re-elected for a third term, defeating Democrat Tim Martin, gaining 74% of the vote, against 24%. He became the first governor of North Dakota, three times elected for 4 years [2] .
Since 2000, since Hooven’s entry into the post of governor, 40,000 new jobs have been created in North Dakota. Wages grew faster than in the whole country. At the end of 2006, the state reserve exceeded $ 600 million [3] . As of December 2009, Hoeven was the most popular governor in the country. His approval rating was 87%, with only 10% disapproval [4] .
On January 11, 2010, Hoeven announced that he would run in the US Senate for the seat vacated by Senator Byron Dorgan. [5] In the elections, he defeated Democrat , gaining 76.08% of the vote, against 22.17%. In the Senate, Huven was a member of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, the Appropriations Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Indian Affairs Committee.
On some issues, Hoeven is conservative. He opposes abortion and public funding of abortion in accordance with the Hyde Amendment. He also opposes same-sex marriage. Huven supports the restriction of parole of criminals [6] .
