Biography

Origin

Born into a wealthy family. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University , and later studied at the graduate school of Cologne University (1972-74, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences). In the period from 1975 to 1983 he worked as a manager in various private companies in the chemical, textile and transport industries.

Political career

In 1983, he joined the Fatherland Party (ANAP), founded by Turgut Ozal , where he took the post of deputy chairman of the party. Since 1983 he was a member of parliament, since 1986 - the Minister of Culture and Tourism, since 1987 - the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In the 90s of the XX century, becoming the leader of the party, Mesut Yilmaz served as the country's prime minister three times, but the duration of both the first and second term did not exceed several months. The first time he was forced to resign after losing a party to the next election. In the second - as a result of disagreements within the government coalition with the Party on the Right Path , whose head was Tansu Chiller . The longest (one and a half year) was the third tenure of Mesut Yılmaz as Prime Minister of the next coalition government of Turkey. He resigned after a vote of no confidence in connection with corruption allegations was issued by the Turkish parliament in late 1998.

Mesut Yilmaz remained the party leader until November 4, 2002. In 2007, he was elected an independent deputy from the city of Rize .
