History

U.S. men's tennis court on clay courts has been held since 1910 . It was first held in Omaha . Since then, the venue has changed every few years. After the start of the Open Era, the tournament was held in eight different cities, including Indianapolis (until 1987 ), Orlando ( 1997 - 2000 ) and Houston (since 2001 , of which until 2007 on the courts were Westside Tennis and Fitness Center). [1] Over time, the tournament moved on the calendar: if it was still held in the summer of the 80s in the summer, before the US Open , [2] [3] then by the time it moved to Houston it was already part of the clay season, representing a stage preparations for the French Open . [4] In 2008, the U.S. Indoor Court Championship was combined with another Houston tournament, River Oaks International , held since 1931 . [one]

Over the years in Houston, the U.S. Championship on clay courts has twice been recognized by the APR as the best tournament in the ATP International category.

Winners and finalists

Bill Tilden , who won the tournament in 1918 and then six more times in a row from 1922 to 1927 , won the most U.S. championships on clay courts. [5] After the start of the Open Era, the most titled U.S. Championship on clay courts was Jimmy Connors , who won four times in it. Three times won the tournament Andy Roddick (five times in a row playing in the final) and Manuel Orantes . In doubles in the era of the Open Era, Bob and Mike Brian won the most titles, who excelled six times in the tournament from 2007 to 2016.
