Selecting material for the album, Genesis, focused on radio rotation, deliberately tried to weed out material reminiscent of anything they had done before [6] .
The album uses a powerful drum sound based on an effect called a gated reverb. The principle of its operation is to use a drum kit artificially amplified through a noise gate, which is cut off sharply when the sound reaches a certain threshold. The result is a powerful βlivelyβ sounding, albeit controlled, blurring sound of drums. This distinctive sound was coined by Gabriel, Collins and their co-producer and engineer Hugh Padham when Collins co-recorded the background track for Intruder, the first track on Gabriel's 1980 solo album. This technique, combined with Padham's production, also appears on Collins' Face Value debut solo album. The gated sound of the drums became the hallmark of subsequent Genesis and Collins albums.
Album Title
In an interview with American radio, Mike Rutherford said that the musical components of the album were conditionally divided into sections "A", "B" and "C"; at different times, they were in a different order, and at some point the sequence βABACABβ turned out (it did not become final, but the name was adopted) [6] .
Criticism Reviews
Rolling Stone magazine praised Genesis for descending from its βivory towerβ and embracing modern musical techniques, comparing them to The Police and XTC [6] .
