Biography
Frederick Koklen was born in the family of a famous cabinetmaker and merchant Bartholomew Koklen. Crafted furniture and decorative elements were delivered by Bartholomew to the court of Emperor Nicholas I. The Coquelin family tree originates in France . Merchant seed sent his son Fedor to study in Paris . After graduating from art school in Paris, Frederick Coquelin entered the Imperial Academy of Arts . In 1835, from the St. Petersburg Academy, Koklen received the title of a non-class artist for the project of the city gates (the title that a student received at the Imperial Academy of Arts after graduation if he was awarded a silver medal). After Fedor Varfolomeevich lived and worked in Odessa. A close friend of the family was an outstanding actor Benoit Coquelin , who came to Odessa and played in the Russian Drama Theater.
Buildings and Structures
Frederick Koklen worked in Odessa in the second half of the 19th century . He managed his own workshop at the intersection of Preobrazhenskaya and Kazarmenny Lane (later Nekrasov 7). Mostly engaged in private practice. Fedor Coquelin was considered one of the best representatives of the French school in architecture. In his works he used stylizations of French architecture of the Renaissance , Baroque and Rococo . He designed mansions and apartment buildings, among them: 2-storey on the corner of Uspenskaya street and Kanatnaya, Cherepennikov's house, Pushkinskaya 16 (1878). He was a member of the Society of Fine Arts, the French community.
