The flag of the Netherlands is one of the state symbols of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . It is a rectangular panel consisting of three horizontal equal-sized stripes: the upper one is red, the middle one is white, and the lower one is blue. The ratio of the width of the flag to the length is 2: 3.

Netherlands Flag History
Initially, the flag of the republic, officially approved in 1599 , was the banner of the Prince of Orange with his ancestral colors: orange, white and blue. Before that, the sea gyuze used 6-9 strip flags with the same color combination. But in 1648 , due to revolutionary upheavals, the orange monarchist streak was replaced by a red one. This flag was preserved as a state flag even after the proclamation of the Netherlands as a monarchy in 1815 .
It is believed that replacing an orange flag with a red flag was also of practical importance: the orange color on sea flags burn out faster than red. During the holidays, the orange pennant of the royal dynasty still rises above the state flag.
