Flag History
For over 300 years, Venezuela has been under Spanish rule. In 1797, an anti-Hispanic conspiracy of independence supporters led by Manuel Gual and José María Espana was launched under the flag of white, blue, red and yellow horizontal stripes symbolizing white , blacks , mulattos and Indians . Although proponents of independence failed, flag colors (with the exception of white) were used in future flags of the liberation movement.
The creator of the flag, on the basis of which later the flags of three states - Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador - appeared , was the outstanding leader of the South American liberation movement Francisco Miranda . This flag of yellow, blue and red horizontal stripes was first hoisted in 1806 on the Leander ship, on which a group of volunteers led by Miranda sailed from New York to South America . The yellow bar symbolized the American continent, rich in gold and other minerals, the red - the bloody dominion of Spain , the blue - the Atlantic Ocean that separated them. This meant that the golden, rich and prosperous Latin America would be free and separated from bloody Spain by the ocean. Under this flag an attempt was made to declare independence in 1810 , the first and second Venezuelan republics were proclaimed in 1811 - 1812 and 1813 - 1814 . Under the same flag, the army of Simon Bolivar in 1816-1822 freed Venezuela from the Spaniards, and it finally gained independence.
Since 1817, 7 (currently 8) stars appear on the blue strip of the flag, symbolizing 7 historical provinces of the country: Caracas , Barinas , Barcelona , Cumana , Margarita , Merida and Trujillo . The location and number of stars was different in different periods, but until the beginning of the 20th century they were most often arranged in a circle with one star in the center. The eighth star was introduced in 2006 at the initiative of President Hugo Chavez and named the “Bolivar Star” in honor of Simon Bolivar . In addition, the eighth star symbolizes the territories of Guyana-Essekibo disputed by Guyana .
